  1. Apple still has a credibility problem

For some time now, there has been speculation that Steve Jobs was sicker than either he or Apple wanted to admit. At first, the company said that he simply had “a bug,” and then when the company announced that he would not be doing his usual keynote speech at Macworld — a speech so associated with …

  2. JPG magazine: Great idea, bad business?

    http://www.mathewingram.com/work/2009/01/03/jpg-magazine-great-idea-bad-business/

Like many others, I was saddened to hear about the closure of JPG, the “crowd-sourced” photography mag that started in 2004 and became a real Web 2.0 success story. I confess that I never actually saw a physical issue of the magazine, but I thought the concept had a lot of merit: a collection of the …

  3. Twply: Instant business — just add Twitter

    http://www.mathewingram.com/work/2009/01/01/twply-instant-business-just-add-twitter/

Everyone knows that the Web speeds up the metabolic rate of many businesses (not to mention lowering the barriers to entry for competitors, of course) but the story of Twply.com has to be a new record: going from hot startup to scapegoat to selling the business in less than 24 hours. …

and that he is working on getting better. Before anyone flames me for not caring about the man or his family, or for prying into what should be personal affairs, or for being “ghoulish” — as someone accused me of being the last time I wrote about the Apple founder’s health — let me just say that I have nothing but respect and admiration for Steve Jobs and what he has done for Apple, and I hope that he gets over his recent health problems and lives a long and happy life. But

Anyone Still Remembers Steve Jobs Is Human?

    http://profy.com/2009/01/05/anyone-still-remembers-steve-job...

escape death like Steve Jobs has escaped. Yet he has chosen to continue with Apple and invest his strength and energy into this company - even though he could go the easier route that could probably be more enjoyable for him personally. I do agree with Mathew Ingram that Steve Jobs is a very important person for Apple and for all the stock holders as it means billions in market valuation for them. But unfortunately I am more than uncomfortable about Apple community thinking of their leader in terms of Apple stock

Jobs owes Apple and its customers more than a hormone imbalance

may seem a silly comparison we expect full health disclosure from the President of the United States and so we should expect the same from a man who can single handily cost Apple billions if he breaths the wrong way. I agree totally with Mathew Ingram when he said today

m just wondering if maybe his high self-regard is distorting just enough of the angles for him to miss some of the writing on the wall. We’ll see. I wish him the best of luck though — and good health. [Update: Matthew Ingram posted similar thoughts.]

    The web abhors a vacuum

    http://burden.ca/blog/2009/01/05/the-web-abhors-a-vacuum

Over the holiday season I read three more examples of how newspaper companies fail to “get” the web. These anti-web modes of thought keep popping up, and keep refusing to die, among newspaper company web strategies. First up: the tired old pay wall debate. Stanford University journalism professor Joel Brinkley suggested, in a San Francisco Chronicle opinion piece, that newspapers can save themselves by ganging up on the rest of us with pay walls. Under his plan, you will have to pay subscription

Roadmap to Victory at Washington Post

podcasts - maybe primarily podcasts, due to the lack of exclusive attention required. Hire internally, or bring someone in from outside, to help the online business adapt to the new and changing landscape involving the internet and social media. The Toronto Globe & Mail did this with Mat Ingram. I’d like to throw out one self-serving offer, since I know that there are increasingly a number of newspapers who are watching, reading or otherwise paying attention to our content here - I’m happy to discuss opportunities where I can step in

Top 5 Voices on the Web (according to me)

    http://smallbutfearsomepixie.com/?p=328

The voices I follow most closely (and WHY!) Loren Feldman from 1938 Media. I am a HUGE fan of Loren. Some people, namely Shel Israel, are not big fans of his shtick. Loren is more or less the “bad boy” of tech and social media. He’ll say things no one else will dare. He’ll make fun of people and call their bluff. He’ll make
